MCA Class Descriptions

Dress Code -back to top-

The purpose of the MCA Dress Code is to create an environment in which home school students are able to honor God and focus on academic excellence without the pressure of sporting the latest fashion trends or attempting to gain their identity through clothing.

MCA students are required to wear MCA polo shirts (with the MCA logo) or school approved spirit shirts (available for purchase through MCA). Students may wear jeans or khakis.

Pre-K (4 years) - Fourth Grade -back to top-

Elementary Education I
   Elementary Education I is for children in Pre-Kindergarten (4 years) through first grade. The class will include subjects such as math, writing, grammar, and reading. Electives such as Bible, science, and geography will also be taught.

Elementary Education II
    Elementary Education II is for children in second, third and fourth grades. The class will include subjects such as math, writing, grammar, and reading. Electives such as Bible, science, and geography will also be taught.

Elementary Explorers
   Elementary Explorers is a class designed to expose young children to a variety of electives such as art, music, physical education, cultures around the world, etc. This is a hands-on class that allows students to explore their world through a variety of means.

Math
    Math-U-See (Epsilon and Zeta Level) combines hands-on methodology with incremental instruction and continual review in this manipulative based program. This program excels in helping students understand how math works.

Science
    This class includes the study of volcanoes, earthquakes, stars, chemistry, motion, the circulatory system, and the biosphere through inquiry based learning, experiments, and hands on activities. BJU Sixth Grade Science textbook and activity manual will be the core curriculum.

Literature and Composition
    This class will teach children writing, grammar, vocabulary, composition, library skills, spelling, listening, oral presentation, thinking/logic, and include exposure to a variety of literature. The class is discussion oriented with a hands-on activities and projects to increase the student's ability to analyze and respond to literature through a variety of means. This class uses the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) as the minimum requirements for the course and builds on them appropriately to provide a challenging and academically rigorous course. In addition, an honors option is available to students who qualify. SUMMER READING IS REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE.

World Geography
     This class will cover world geography this year as a follow up to the previous year's study of World History. Students will explore the world through hands on projects and research that will allow them to "travel" to different continents. Map skills, geographical characteristics, culture, and mission opportunities will be explored. Students will read selected novels from various geographic areas. Students will also explore mission and prayer opportunities and read selected novels and biographies to encourage a Christian worldview and mission mind.

Spanish I or Spanish II
    Through games, conversations, and other interactive activities, students will learn basic Spanish vocabulary and phrases that will lay a strong foundation before taking Spanish l. Students who have already taken conversational spanish may choose to take the next level in Spanish ll. Realidades is a standards-based Spanish curriculum that balances grammar and communication. The program offers technology designed to integrate language and culture to teach and motivate all students.

Physically Fit Kids
    This class is designed to teach kids about motor skills, coordination and how to set personal physical fitness goals for life. Through small group participation, they will develop new skill levels that will help them to be successful and feel good about themselves and motivate them to participate in exercise and recreational activities beyond the physical education setting.

Drama/Bible
    First Semester : Calling all actors! This class will provide a fun learning environment for young actors and actresses to become familiar with the stage and production process. Students will participate in a Christmas production and smaller scaled skits throughout the year. They will also perform short skits during selected chapel services. This class will enhance their confidence and ability to perform before an audience.

Second Semester: Students will take a journey through the Bible in this exciting and relevant course!

Art
    Creativity – finding new ways of putting old things together to create something new. God created the world from nothing and we are created in His image, thus we are all creative. The two goals of this class are to explore the seven elements of design using different media and art history, and expressing our relationship with God in a visual form. We will be using collage, drawing, painting, sculpture and photography to give glory to our Creator through the visual arts. This class is more about creative visual art expression and less about technical painting and drawing.

Math II OR Math III
   
Using Holt, Reinhart, and Wilson's Math Course II or Math Course III, students will cover basic algebraic concepts and real life application. In addition, use of current technology and the internet are utilized in the program. Students will use a printed textbook and have access to an online textbook with video guides and additional resources. The course will follow the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills)

Apologia General Science
   
This course covers such topics as the scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology. Its scope, therefore, is quite wide. Labs are included.

Apologia Physical Science
  
The course discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton's Laws, gravity, and astrophysics.

Literature and Grammar
    This class covers the literature, writing, and grammar component of English. A variety of literature will be read including short stories, poetry, drama and novels. Grammar and vocabulary will also be a key component of this course. In addition, students will learn how to read literature through a biblical worldview as they begin to answer the five basic questions to determine an author's worldview. Literature circles, mulit-level reading list options and project-based assessment will be utilized. This class uses the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) as the minimum requirements for the course and builds on them appropriately to provide a challenging and academically rigorous course. US Geography
   
This class is a survey of American Geography. Using maps, almanacs, novels, timelines, and hands-on activities, students will gain a vast knowledge of America. An emphasis on Texas geography and history will be included. Students will also explore opportunities for missions in different regions of the country.

Physically Fit Kids
   This class is designed to teach kids about motor skills, coordination and how to set personal physical fitness goals for life. Through small group participation, they will develop new skill levels that will help them to be successful and feel good about themselves and motivate them to participate in exercise and recreational activities beyond the physical education setting.

Biology
    The Apologia Biology course is designed to be the student's first high school science course and is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a tough university biology course.

Literature and Composition
    In this class, students will learn: to think critically about their world and their participation in it; to write their thoughts, primarily through essays; and to articulate their thoughts through small group discussions with peers and activities that promote a deep understanding of literature. Students will be challenged to read literature from a biblical worldview. In addition, SAT vocabulary/prep will be included in this course. This course will use the TEKS as the minimal expectations. In addition, an honors option is available to students who qualify. SUMMER READING IS REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE.

Algebra I

Spanish I (High School Level)
    A standards-based high school curriculum that balances communications and grammar. Written to meet the needs of the diverse learners in today's classroom, REALIDADES uniquely integrates language, culture, and technology to teach and motivate all students. Students completing REALIDADES 3 will be well prepared for placement tests and upper-level study.

World Geography
BJU Cultural Geography 9 (3rd ed.) provides a survey of both geographic principles and every country of the world through a regional approach. Following the theme of a Grand Tour, students "travel"from continent to continent around the world studying the cultures, land forms, climates, resources,economy, religions, and government of each country. This new edition is filled with photographs,charts, maps, and first-person accounts that make this "virtual world tour" an exciting and stimulating experience.. Students will also explore mission and prayer opportunities and read selected novels and biographies to encourage a Christian worldview and mission mind.

Art

Using Total Health by Susan Boe, a curriculum for high school designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of all important health issues. Directs teens toward making wise choices from a Christian perspective.

Six Man Football (6th-9th Grade
   At Orientation, we will be sharing about requirements for the program (physicals, etc.), practice times, upcoming scrimmages, and more.  

Girl's Volleyball (6th-9th Grade)  Coach: Ashley Jensen
   Girl's volleyball is the newest sports addition to our program. Ashley Jensen is a teacher for MCA and played girl's volleyball during high school and college. At the meeting, Coach Jensen will be sharing about requirements for the program (physicals, etc.), practice times, upcoming scrimmages, and more.

MCA Honor Society -back to top-

MCA is in the process of applying for a charter for the Eta Sigma Alpha Honor Society.  Below are the mandatory requirements for a student to be a member:

*A test score of 1800 (SAT) or 26 (ACT) or 180 (PSAT) or 90% on the composite/complete battery on the IOWA, Stanford, California, MAR, or other nationally normed standardized acheivement tests.  The test score is non-negotiable.  Sponsors are not to make exceptions for anyone.  Core total cannot be used.

*Must have a 3.5 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale. ( This GPA may include the parent transcript, early admission college courses, co-op or support group home school class grade, or similar coursework supervised/directed by the homeschooing parent.)

* Letters of recommendation

*  Only those students who meet the HSLDA definition of a home schooler are eligible for ESA membership. A student must complete 50% of his/her studies at home under the direct supervision of the parent.  Co-op programs, group classes, and even community college courses are acceptable as long as the 50% rule is followed.
